Eating locallyApril 14, 2008 9:29 am
I got some local tomatoes from Kauffman’s stand at the Reading Terminal Market. They were $3.99/lb and I bought two pounds. According to Bob Libkind, they were grown in greenhouses.
Meanwhile my own Siberian determinant tomato plants have been placed outside in our backyard. I hope they don’t die.

After your comment about buying tomatoes I went in search of affordable ones at a different farmers market. I was so happy to find they were $2/pound and bought some wild argula (they were a lot bitter than the ones from TJ’s) and eat it raw just like that - no olive oil or anything. I also picked up fresh spinach and brocollini along with strawberries and grapefruit from the Coachella Valley.
You’re going to love California and LA - the Coachella Valley, Indio, Palm Springs grow dates too and grapefruit. I don’t even have to eat Texas Ruby grapefruit when I can have ones grown from the Salton Sea.
The produce will be amazing all year round. I’m amazed you can get fresh soft shelled crab at the markets. We won’t be getting salmon this year but plenty of oysters.

I think you are right in that I will like the variety of local food availability all year round.
Your comment got me really excited about moving (and less apprehensive). If everything else sucks, at least the produce will be good.
I almost fainted when I saw the tomatoes at Kauffman’s stand. Never been happier to see them.
