Stuff to do in preparation of our move (Declutter Challenge Update)
I’m putting this post in the Cut the Crap category. This is all the stuff I need to do before moving cross country in terms of getting rid of stuff.
April - Get rid of all books: sell, swap or donate. Get rid of misc. junk.
May - Get rid of/Donate extra clothing, shoes. Get rid of/Donate duplicate utensils and tools. Reduce CDs.
June - Can we become a single computer household? Scan all essential documents currently in paper format. Shred/burn other confidential papers. Get all essential non-scannable paperwork (passports/Social Sec. card) into a single zip folder. Clean all cruft off of computer.
July - Make sure all staples are getting close to finishing. Donate/Sell containers holding staples, packing boxes.
August - Get rid of furniture (tables, chairs, futon, couch, chest of drawers, computers, air conditioner, side tables, chest, kitchen stand). Give composter away to loving home
. Donate clothes hangers. Donate/Sell bikes. Donate trash bins. Donate plant pots w/ and w/o plants.

How about scan all your CDs on your computer, so you can reduce the number of CDs to 0.

Some of the CDs are backups of data/music/large files. This is in addition to our remote server backup. So its not that numerous.

Um, are you moving into a cave? Sounds like you will have nothing left!

Chile: The cost of moving our stuff far outweighs the cost of the stuff (which is one reason I don’t have renter’s insurance since the sale value is probably less than $300). So we’re going to reduce everything so it can fit into one or two suitcases. Both of us are also looking into travelling jobs (like with the Dept. of Interior or Americorps) which might involve frequent moving.
Plus so many people who moved cross country and used moving services had negative experiences. I want the piece of mind.
