Radishes are in season and I don’t think I’ve had them prior to yesterday. I’ve been introduced to so many new fruits and vegetables since I began eating locally…who knew eating local foods to be so adventurous?
Last night I made radish salad which was most excellent. The recipe is from Blooming Glen farm - a farm that is a regular at the farmers’ market I frequent.
The recipe is as follows:
1 bunch watermelon radishes or one medium daikon radish
2 tablespoons rice or balsamic vinegar (or a combination)
1 tablespoon soy sauce
1 teaspoon sugar
2 teaspoons sesame oil
2 garlic cloves, finely choppedWash and julienne radishes, or grate them. Mix together the rest of the ingredients and dress the radishes with the dressing. Save your radish tops for other uses.

Me too! I had never tried collard greens or chard. I’d never had brussels sprouts either or any kind of squash other than summer squash. It turns out I enjoy them all. Shopping in the grocery, it was just too easy to get the same-old, same-old week after week. Eating locally and seasonally really opens up the door to a whole new range of foods and it’s so completely exciting!
Plus, I never enjoyed cooking before either. Now, I’m still no chef, but coming home with new veggies has been like getting a new puzzle: “With a little work, I wonder what this could become!”
Enjoy your radish salad!

I had chard and brussel sprouts for the first time last year. You’re right in how we get into a rut when visiting a grocery store. There is some stat on how limiting the American palate (sp?) is and that bothered me. I think potato was the big vegetable that everyone ate.
The more I cook the more I enjoy it. I remember despising the thought of being in a kitchen when I was younger. I was quite the idiot.
The radish salad was most delicious.
